How does metabolic conditioning work?
A metabolic conditioning workout draws on all three of your body’s metabolic energy systems – phosphagen, glycolytic, and oxidative.² By constantly changing the work intensity and rest periods, your body is forced to switch rapidly between them:
- Phosphagen system – your instant energy source. It powers short, explosive efforts (think an all-out sprint or a heavy lift) for around 10 seconds before needing to recover.²
- Glycolytic system – your mid-range engine. It fuels those tougher 30-second-to-two-minute stations by breaking down carbohydrates to keep you going when things start to burn.²
- Oxidative system – your endurance system. It uses oxygen to burn carbs and fat, powering you through longer, sustained efforts like a steady jog.²

Types of metabolic conditioning workouts

There are plenty to choose from, and you’ll find many of them woven throughout our sessions. Below, we take a quick look at some of the different metabolic conditioning workouts and how we put them to work in our group fitness classes.
Circuit training
In circuit training, you’ll perform multiple exercises, back-to-back, at different stations.
As Bell puts it, “Circuits are the backbone of what we do – you move around the room from one station to the next, hitting different muscle groups so your whole body gets a workout in one session.”
AMRAP (as many rounds or reps as possible)
AMRAP involves working through a set sequence, repeating it as many times as you can within a fixed time.
“AMRAP is where you get to challenge yourself,” says Bell. “You set your own pace, keep moving, and see how much you can achieve before the clock runs out. It’s you versus you.”
Functional hybrid workouts
These combine resistance, cardio, and bodyweight movements in one session. As Bell explains, “All of our workouts use metabolic conditioning, but our hybrid workouts pair strength work with high-intensity cardio – so you’re building real power while boosting your running endurance at the same time.”
Metabolic conditioning exercises
Metabolic conditioning exercises work several large muscle groups at once while keeping your heart rate high – so you get all the benefits of strength training, while challenging your cardio in the same movement. You’ll spot plenty of these in an F45 workout, including:
- Burpees – a full-body move from floor to jump, working your legs, chest, arms, and core.
